Sándor Köröspataki Kiss (1936-2004). Our
friend and colleague, Sándor Köröspataki Kiss, critic,
editor, writer and translator, member of the Board of the Hungarian FIPRESCI,
passed away. He studied English and Hungarian literature at ELTE University
in Budapest. During his long career he edited radio programmes, wrote
theatre and film reviews, worked as chief editor of the Uj Tükör
magazine, editor-in-chief of Ország Világ magazine, as
well as Daily News. He was a lecturer of Egyptian, British and Hungarian
universities. He wrote books, translated plays and novels from English
to Hungarian, among them the works of Edward Albee and Harold Pinter.
He covered major film festivals for the national daily, Magyar Hírlap.
Within the Board of Hungarian FIPRESCI he was in charge of international
affairs. We called him "our Foreign Secretary". He was an excellent
expert of film, theatre and literature, he knew everything about journalism,
moreover, he was a perfect diplomat. With his grey hair, elegant suits
and refined manner, he was the man of compromises in our Board and at
the General Assemblies of FIPRESCI. Two weeks ago, before leaving for
vacation, I called him, as I usually do when I leave for a longer period.
I wanted to ask him to be our delegate at the General Assembly in Viareggio
this year. His wife picked up the receiver. "He can not come to
the phone", she said, "he's in a very bad shape. And I'm sure,
he won't be able to attend the assembly this September", she added.
All of us knew that he had been fighting with a deadly illness for years. "Please
tell him", I answered, "that this time I'll go there, but next
time will be his turn." "OK, I'll tell him", his wife
answered with a strange, descending tone in her voice. When I got back
to Budapest, bad news awaited me: I had to realize that he will never
go to Viareggio, we'll never discuss films, festivals and the matters
of film criticism. Sandor, who was a dedicated and passionate traveller,
went on his last trip. (György Báron)
