The Director of the Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema Was Fired

Under the direction of our colleague Eduardo Antin (Quintin), the Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente has become a most important and influential platform of independent world cinema and an excellent place to get acquainted with most recent Latin-American and in particular Argentinean films. There are, however, recently turbulence and turmoil around the festival which depends (financially and organizationally) mainly from the municipal government and also from INCAA, the Argentinean Film Institute (which depends on the national government). It is reported that the Secretary of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires fired Quintin — formally because Quintin has engaged himself in programming a small festival of independent films in December in Mar del Plata, but one of the real reasons is probably that Quintin never was an easy-to-handle fest director and did never support the Argentinean mainstream films and their makers and producers.

French film critic Jean-Michel Frodon and the magazine »Cahiers du Cinéma« launched an appeal to support Quintin. Hundreds of film people signed Arrow.
FIPRESCI Argentina gives its view on the case Arrow.
