Thessaloniki 2006

Suely in the Sky.Our federation gives two prizes at this major event: one for a film in competition - this year it went to Suely in the Sky (O céu de Suely) by Karin Ainouz (Brazil, 2006). And one for a film screened in the Greek Panorama: it went to Eduart by Angeliki Antoniou (Greece, Germany, 2006).

Reports

Suely in the Screen. The relaxed presence of Wim Wenders and Walter Salles made for a friendly festival but José Carlos Avellar argues their road movies drew allusions to Suely in the Sky, a fictional film in competition played like a documentary.
Old Films and New Technology. Sergei Lavrentiev laments the passing of old films being seen in their original format as even this major festival retorts to showing most of their classic Greek films of yesteryear in cheaper digital transfers.
What… Greeks may Come. Greek filmmaking is struggling in the present but dares to dream of a better future. Ioanna Papageorgiou looks at the state of the nation as it tries to escape the shadow of Theo Angelopoulos.
German Movies at Thessaloniki: Social Criticism and Emotional Longing. There are signs that the German Cinema is finding its feet again after years of mainstream films that did not challenge critically. Thilo Wydra looks at an example of this new wave.
Balkan Survey. Genoveva Dimitrova thoroughly enjoyed her first visit to the festival, particularly the films from the Balkans. Here she draws attention to the highly rated and over-rated entries from the region.
