Sofia 2005

Winning Film.
Adam, Paul.

A young festival, this year in its 9th edition. A showcase of independent world cinema. Fest director Stefan Kitanov dedicates a special attention to films from the region and in particular from Bulgaria. This included not only recent films, but as well a view back on the old masters, such as Christo Christov or Martin Slicka, who's forbidden documentary A Man Leaves Us (1968) was shown for the first time (read Hans-Joachim Schlegels presentation). Genoveva Dimitrova reviews Adam & Paul by Lenny Abrahamson, the winner of the FIPRESCI Prize. Details of the prize Arrow.

Reports
Miserable Dreams. Genoveva Dimitrova reviews the winner of the Critics Prize, Adam & Paul, the first feature film by Irish director Lenny Abrahamson. "Lenny Abrahamson manifests a temperamental heartiness and a cinematographic hygiene which is amazing for a debutant", she writes. Arrow.
Remedies Against Numbers. Cristina Corciovescu is impressed by the enterprising Sofia Film Festival, but not by the 'dull' Bulgarian productions. Arrow.
A Premiere after 37 Years. Hans-Joachim Schlegel discovered a short documentary shot in Bulgaria in 1968, censored at the time, now for the first time shown in Bulgaria: A Man Leaves Us by Martin Slivka, "an ethnological poem about funeral customs in Bulgaria". Arrow.
