Thessaloniki Documentary 2004

"Barefoot to Herat" (Majid Majidi)

Images of the 21st Century is the title and motto of the Documentary Film Festival held in the Greek city of Thessaloniki. Among the films shown in different sections, our jury thought Majid Majidi's "Barefoot to Herat" to be the best. Details of the prize

"Barefoot to Herat".
"The film's title", writes Karin Wolfs in her review, "refers to an exhausted boy fighting against his tears. Barefooted, he started out for a two hour walk to Herat, the nearest city to the refugee camp, in order to beg for crumbs of bread for his little brothers and sisters.
In her review of the same film, Asli Selcuk writes: The "film reflects the impressive quest for survival of these proud people who are striving to recover from war and to form a new way of life; the film captures the reactions of the refugees expressing their memories, disappointments, despair and their unending resistance, hoping for a better life."
