Guadalajara 2004

XIX Muestra Cine Mexicano
e Ibero-Americana

The Guadalajara Film Fest won reputation as showcase of Mexican cinema. Now, it includes Latin-American, Spanish and Portuguese films — films from "Ibero-America". Our jury saw two sections: the Ibero-American and the Mexican competition of long feature films. The FIPRESCI Prize was presented in both sections: to "Take My Eyes" (Te doy mis ojos), a first feature film by Iciar Bollain (Spain), and to the Mexican debut "Duck Season" (Temporara de patos) by Fernando Eimbcke. At the occasion of the festival, the first printed issue of the online magazine "The Thinking Eye" (El ojo que piensa) was presented.
Details of the prize

Fiesta Mexicana. Klaus Eder writes on the new festival conception, on a new dominance of cultural points of view over political and economic dependencies on the United States, on book presentations and on the charming fiestas organized by the festival.
"Duck Season". Lucy Virgen reviews the winning film: "To watch four people get high without making you feel you are the only sober one, the only bored one at the party, is remarkable for any director."
"To Your Eyes Only". José Carlos Avellar discovered that three films put a special attention to the eye: "What the Eye Doesn’t See" (Ojos que no ven) by Francisco Lombardi, "I do not know what your eyes made to me" (Yo no sé qué me han hecho tus ojos) by Sergio Wolf and "Take my Eyes" (Te doy mis ojos) by Iciar Bollaín.
The Argentinean Boom. Issac Leon Frias portrays new Argentinean films: "Argentinean films seen in Guadalajara confirm the contributions presented by a new generation which not only presents varied views of a current Argentinean reality, but also which contribute to the reflection on the creative possibilities of film art."
