Christoffer Boe, Nuri Bilge Ceylan
San Sebastian, September 18, 2003

These awards have been presented at the opening gala of the San Sebastian International Film Festival. Both of these awards are characterized by the fact that they are freely conferred by the International Critics who have chosen a movie and a new director among all the films released between August 2002 and July 2003. This year, 160 Federation members have taken part in the voting for the Grand Prix for the best film of the year. The Grand Prix for a new director of the year is awarded by a jury formed by the FIPRESCI board.

Best Foreign Language Film of the Year
Mies vailla menneisyytta (The Man Without A Past)
by Aki Kaurismaki
(Finland, 2002), for "the touching representation of a man who, in spite of tragic circumstances, reinvents himself without losing his humanity and humour. In a droll style and with deceptive simplicity, the film evokes a classical moviemaking approach."
The selection has been made between all films submitted to the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award and shown in the framework of the Palm Springs Film Festival. The jury was composed of Bojidar Manov (Bulgaria), president, Susana Schild (Brazil), Bruce Kirkland (Canada), Barbara Lorey de Lacharrière (France), Robert Koehler (USA).
