First Grand Prix for a New Director of the Year

These awards were announced at the opening gala of the San Sebastian International Film Festival. Both of these awards are characterized by the fact that they are freely conferred by the International Critics who have chosen a movie and a new director among all the films released between August 2001 and July 2002. This year, 200 Federation members from 41 countries have taken part in the voting for the Grand Prix for the best film of the year. The Grand Prix for a new director of the year is awarded by a jury formed by the FIPRESCI board.

European Film Award of the Critics
Ken Loach (Sweet Sixteen)

FIPRESCI, the International Federation of Film Critics, presented the European Film Award of the Critics 2002 to the British director Ken Loach and his film "Sweet Sixteen", acknowledging as well his episode in the film "11'09"01 - September 11".
The decision was made by a jury composed of Ronald Bergan (UK), Carlos Brandao (Brazil), Michel Ciment (France), Klaus Eder (Germany), Bojidar Manov (Bulgaria), Jean Roy (France) and Grégory Valens (France).
The Prize was given to Ken Loach in the framework of the European Film Awards on December 7, 2002, in Rome, Italy.

Best Foreign Language Film of the Year
Go (Go) by Isao Yukisada
(Japan, 2001) " for its mastery of an eclectic style and tone, which is mirrored in the way its protagonist forges a single identity out of a problematic multicultural background"
This award was given on the occasion of the Palm Springs film festival (USA, January 10-21, 2002), among the films selected for the Academy Award for Best Film in a Foreign Language. The jury was composed of Nenad Dukic (Yugoslavia, president), Jacob Neiiendam (Denmark), Günter Jekubzik (Germany), Katherine Tulich (Australia), Henry Sheehan (USA).

Best Latin American Film of the Year
Japón (Japan) by Carlos Reygadas
(Mexico, 2002) "for the cinematically daring way it leads us back to the roots of Mexican culture by raising questions of life and death".
A Prize went as well to Arturo Ripstein honoring his career as a master of Latin American Cinema, on the occasion of his last film "La virgen de la lujuria" (Virgin of Lust).
These special awards were given on the occasion of the Rio de Janeiro film festival (Brazil, September 26 - October 10, 2002), by a jury composed of Klaus Eder (Germany, president), Horacio Bernades, (Argentina), Jorge Jellinek (Uruguay), Susanna Schild (Brazil), Deborah Young (USA).
