And to Bye Bye Africa, directed by Mahamat-Saleh Horoun (Chad), "for a debut which underlines in a fresh and audacious way the intense difficulties faced by film-makers, and the cinema itself, in presentday Africa".

To encourage young film-makers, the Jury decided to award a Prize to the documentary La espalda del mundo (The Back of the World) by Javier Corcuera (Spain 2000), "for the way the director engages with three of the great horrors of our time, and, through the people he shows us, constructs a stylistically strong and shocking film".

And last but not least for their extraordinary and gracious blending of music and images."
